My N8 & Quirks of owning it!

So, after much research and brain picking N8 was the choice of this years phone for me. So what's the feedback? Anyone who sees it goes "oh my this is N8, wow !! this is expensive..." Firstly people notice it because it's expensive, everyone has asked the price of this phone at some point or the other, so they know. Then they will ask "how much did YOU pay for it?" As if by some twist of fate I may have paid LESS.
Secondly, some techo-brats will ask me the specs of the model, when I rattle of the specs which includes a simply awesome Camera 12 MP carl Zeiss lens with dual LED flash and HD recording, it comes with a HDMI output too, I try to explain that direct output to TV. which mostly doesn't ring a bell. I try to tell them about the Photo Editor software clubbed with it which makes instant red eye correction, cropping and brightness balance possible before uploading or mailing as attachments.
Thirdly, I get asked can u do Net on this? which I really don't know how to answer. I try telling them, yes with a correct Data plan even a old W155 Sony ericsson could "do net" and this one comes with a relatively smooth browsing experience, yes a touch screen makes the experience a little more smoother than a trackpad or trackball browsing. But sometimes the touch screen can make it difficult to tap the correct hyperlink, but I can guarantee after a few days with this you will not even like the laptop or desktop touchpad or mouse... What people are most interested in knowing is whether I can use FB from this.. yes the functioning is smooth. Some will raise another query can you check mails on this? Yes I can, I can configure the mail boxes for gmail, yahoo etc and have an immediate update of any mails received, opening attachments doesn't take too long, it supports, pic files, excel sheets, word and power point, even a zipped folder. What they want to know next is whether I have my official mail configured here? The answer to which is simple, My company didn't give me this phone to track my mails, nor do they pay for my data plan which is fairly expensive. So no, I don't.
Fourthly, they want to know how is the touch screen to use, difficult? I never seem to know how to answer this. Adapting to technology is an individual thing, I tend to adapt faster. So I have got used to this phone and its quirks, yes it does have some... more on that later.I offer them the touchscreen for an attempt, they can't manage it and give up, their trial lasts about 54-50 secs. And they say I have no patience.

That's the limit of their queries, no wonder people end up with phones that don't suit them, no one really asks the important questions, or even if they do they don't know what answer they are looking for. Oh before I forget they always ask is this Android? As if my positive response would make any difference ... worse, they have no clue which are the brands that produce android handsets.

My Phone & it's Quirks:

  1. The Potrait & landscape mode are the master of their own whims, which basically means the orientation of the screen sometimes lags or gets too sensitive.
  2. For some reason after typing about half a page of message on fb, I get a method not implemented error.I have no clue why.
  3. The camera is Awesome, low light or completely dark room, the Flash is brilliant, case in point I clicked it in a dark room ... and the images were clear.
  4. The size of the images are manageable and the in built photo editor is a life saver.
  5. The touchscreen is biometric which means only skin on the fingertips will get a response. For people like me who like to keep their nails long, this is a blow, I have to keep my nails short otherwise I can't operate the phone. Guess what I am sure no one told you this.
  6. When I am using the internet browser, for some reason touching a certain area of the screen always opnes up the music player. No idea why.
  7. The touch screen is supposed to become unresponsive once a call is connected and but for some reason My phone's screen keeps coming alive.. so to speak and my calls were going on hold or getting disconnected. I will admit this has reduced possibly I have got used to handle the phone better.
  8. Typing on a touch screen is an entirely new experience. sometimes the response to key touch is slow which results in typos.
  9. The Speaker for the phone is at a the back just beside the camera and flash which means all sounds get muffled when the phone is placed on a surface; when listening to music on the loud speaker it's a pain.
  10. The Screen smudges badly especially when using outside in this sweaty summer.
  11. The screen lock key is sometimes un responsive on fast use.
  12. The camera key seems to be wobbly to me.
  13. I have discovered FM transmission which allows me to play my playlist when In the car through the FM Tuner in the car.
  14. The Data connectivity through the built in modem of the phone to my laptop is good. It's good enough to watch videos on Youtube with very little streaming. This means I will never be disconnected even if my Broadband or other data card fails :)
  15. Connecting the phone with My laptop I can listen to the songs from my phone music player through the Laptop Speakers.
Ok, I know some of the stuff I listed above are not special to my phone, probably all new generation multimedia gadgets have them, but I am seriously enjoying the benefits of this phone to the fullest, may be E63 hindred my experimentation, but I love my phone. On the low side I am the official photographer and any event at office which means I never feature in any photos.
It does have its idiosyncrasies but I am a proud owner of Nokia N8. Currently there is no other Phone I would rather own. And that's saying a lot.
